New Nintendo Account Registration Is Now Open
Nintendo have opened registration for their new account system, it is simply called a Nintendo Account. The new account will be multiplatform between the NX and the future 3DS successor. At the moment you can sign up for your account via Facebook, Twitter, Google + or by using your current Nintendo Network ID. Alternatively you can forego linking it to one of these and just sign up via email. You can sign up for the new account here.
Other than acquiring your desired username, there is little reason to sign up now. The account will be necessary to sign up for their new reward system and the upcoming Miitomo application for smartphones and tablets. Miitomo is a Mii based social networking app that allows you to customise your own Mii and chat with friends. If you already have your new Nintendo Account, you can pre-register for Miitomo here. You will then get an email when Miitomo is available.
The social integration of this new account is quite interesting. It may give us a glimpse of the road Nintendo intend to go down with their upcoming consoles. Nintendo have needed a proper account system for some time now. Players are used to having a named account that works across a platform. Their NNID and friend codes weren’t doing them any favours in the past, so it’s nice to finally see the company get with the times.
The NX platform is currently rumoured for a 2016 release. We’re almost two months into the year at this point, so a reveal event should come up by E3 at the very latest. Whatever Nintendo ends up doing for their next console, it will undoubtedly be interesting. Perhaps it will be a traditional console, or it could have a new gimmick. Whatever the case, hopefully we get more info about the new console, sooner rather than later.
